Support Sytems

Structural vulnerabilities happen

They happen both naturally and as a result of poor "care". (Click here to learn about the most common structural weakness). Risk associated with these vulnerabilities can often be reduced with a little support from cables, crutches, through rods or some combination of the three.

Where possible, we favor dynamic cable with non-penetrating hardware. This avoids drilling into trees. It also allows trees to move in ways that encourage them to be as self-supporting as possible. These cables act as back-stops during the most severe weather events while letting trees carry on as usual on the average day.

We currently like a very well thought out German system which self-adjusts over time as trees grow.

Dynamic cable installation

Where it's best to fully immobilize part of a tree we use steel. A gentleman in Georgia designed a brilliant system which minimizes the amount of hardware required while also dramatically reducing the diameter of holes that need to be drilled. Trees thank you, Steve!
